It’s crude but it makes perfect sense. The only thing I’d quibble with is that (from what I can tell out in the real world), most men don’t really seem to be all that interested in who drove the car before or how many people drove it.

Well, I think it depends on a number of factors. Extending the analogy, one consideration is whether the car is being considered for a rental, lease, or long-term ownership. If it is just a short-term rental then who cares who drove it before, and how many. Odds are it will operate perfectly fine for the short time you drive it, and you won’t be exposed to potential breakdowns and cost of repair. The condition of the vehicle isn’t very important. Now if you are going to buy the car for intended ownership of 10+ years, now those things are very important.
Additionally, you’ve got the buying power of the buyer and his options for transportation. If he can ONLY afford that vehicle, and only has $500 to pay for a jalopy, well, it is either that or walk. In the current auto market, I think most guys have limited options for transportation so they basically buy whatever vehicle is available regardless of its condition.

Re: female triggers, status/money signals, late-bloomers, etc. One school of thought on this is that, for women, the man’s SMV is something like a soup—various ingredients are mixed with a base to create a complete food item.
From that POV, the woman is sampling the entire soup and deciding that it is “Hot” or “Not.” Maybe a photo of guys in swim trunks on the beach would give no information content beyond who is physically attractive and who is not—that would be a comparison of pure Base characteristics or whatever. But in, say, a crowded coffee bar in SoHo when it is 10 degrees F outside and the group is discussing David Hume, perhaps a different guy who has a more balanced and tasty overall “soup” may do well.
