Here’s an even bigger test – get sick with someone. Current guy and I got an awful stomach bug and were both down for maintenance for over a week. You never know someone until you’ve nursed them through a major puke-fest or had kids with them (or shared an inheritance with them, as my lawyer sibling likes to say). Within that same month, we were also snowed in together for 10 days, and that was actually great fun, but could have been a deal killer if one or the other had turned out to be a whiny, antsy pain in the ass.
I didn’t see any benefit at all to living together first *as a predictor of marriage success*, we had to start over in a lot of ways in working out how our marriage was going to work. Everything was brand new once we’d decided til death do us part, which really was our stated goal. We were also very young, 22 when we married, but 27 years isn’t a terrible track record.
